Sliema, or Tas-Sliema to the locals, which means Peace. This former fishing village, developed as a tourist resort for wealthy Valletta residents is one of the islands major resorts. It is a centre for shopping, restaurants and outdoor cafe life. There are stunning views to be enjoyed of the capital, Valletta and out to sea. There is a really nice promenade which runs for several miles to Gzira which is ideal for walkers or joggers and it's a great sociable place to be on summer evenings. The coastline has two impressive tower fortifications, A De Redin watchtower dating back to the 17th century, the other built by the British in the 1880's.
