Set on the rugged northern shores of Menorca in the Balearic Islands, this smart resort hugs the hillside overlooking the horseshoe-shaped bay of Cala Tirant. It’s a relatively undiscovered corner of the island, so easy-going's the watchword here, with just a handful of go-slow bars and restaurants. Head a few kilometres east, and you’ll find the traditional fishing village of Fornells, famous for its seafood and regular visitor, former King of Spain, Juan Carlos I.

Peaceful sands

Down at Cala Tirant beach, there’s a real emphasis on ‘tranquilo’, meaning peace and quiet. You won’t find lots of restaurants and watersports centres. Instead, it’s dominated by thatched umbrellas and loungers, so there’s plenty of sand left for stretching out. Plus, it’s popular with snorkelers, thanks to the crystal-clear and shallow waters.

Trips to Fornells

Fornells is just up the road – five minutes’ drive or a half-an-hour walk away. Either way, you’ll be greeted by whitewashed buildings and a picturesque harbour. Watch as the fishing boats come and go, bringing their catch of the day with them. Then, sample the seafood in a marina-view restaurant. A short walk away is Torre de Fornells, a 19th-century watchtower offering panoramic views over the Mediterranean coastline.
