This imposing and monumental parish church is considered to be one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture on the island.

The design of the structure, which was built between 1727 and 1745, is attributed to Salvu Borg. The church overlooks a cone-shaped open square, which is surrounded by dense low-rise urban buildings, which accentuate the church’s grandeur.

The facade of this particular church is believed to have been modelled after Lorenzo Gafa’s Mdina Cathedral since it is alleged that Borg was mentored by Gafa during the construction of the parish church of St Paul in Rabat.

A medal of St Helen was found buried here.
