It is a huge monumental structure with the combination of columns from Greek architecture and the pyramid-shaped roof of Egypt. Therefore all structures built in the same style are called mausoleums. It is a giant mausoleum adorned with 36 columns of original Ionic order which was originally 46 meters high with a victory horse cart on the top crowned by a pyramid with 21 steps. It was preserved until the 13 century AD, when an earthquake destroyed it, then its stones were used for the construction of Bodrum Castle. Many of its sculptures and its carvings were taken to the British Museum by the British Archaeologist C. Newton. That's why most artefacts of the monument are exhibited in the British Museum, but a few of them are exhibited in Bodrum.
