Kastro is located on the northern coast of the island and was built around 1360. The locals decided to settle there and stayed there for nearly 500 years, as it was on a raised clifftop so was easy to defend from Turkish pirates. Kastro,(which translates to castle) was a city of around 400 houses and 20 churches built in the area and was a thriving community for many centuries. The problem was due to rough sea of the north coast it was forlorn to elements and was hard to get supplies to and fro, so in 1829, the cities people decided to abandon the city and relocate to what is Skiathos town today. taking many of the buildings materials they only left what they could not transport. Today the remains make for a pleasant historic walk around the ancient city. Access is either by boat when the sea is calm and a walk up the cliffside steps or by car via small dirt track off the main road.
