This fortress sits protecting the harbour of Corfu town. The building of it started in 1577 by the Venetians and engineer Ferrante Vitelli and was completed with the town walls in 1588. Many homes and building were said to have been destroyed in order for the materials to be used in the construction of the fortress. Further development was made by the British when they occupied the island. Vast areas and buildings within the fort were destroyed in the Second World War.
Visitors can walk around the grounds all buildings are locked and the area used by the Greek Naval base is restricted due to security reasons.
The views from the top are breathtaking and certainly worth the hike to the top.
