Just shouting distance from Corfu Town you will find the small island of Vidos. A small island but an island with bags full of history,
The small taxi boats from the old port of Corfu run on the hour from early till late and costs a couple of euros return, will take you to the small port on the island.
This island was used in during the First World War as a hospital and quarantine area for the sick Serbian soldiers due to the conditions and the basic equipment many died on the island. As the death toll grew to 5000 + they buried many of the dead at sea and in the 1930 a monument playing tribute to the soldiers was placed on the island. Many say some bones found have been buries in the monument. You will see many Serbian visitors to the island place flowers and kiss the monument as still today it is a big part of their countries history.
Today as you walk around the island you will see the rocky cost line, small areas of beach, clear waters great for snorkelling, the ruins of the Governors house, bar and restaurant and the scouts camp that is where many of the children of Corfu will camp during the summer.
My favourite thing to do is sit looking back over to the island of Corfu, marvel at the beauty of the Venetian house lining the streets of Corfu.
