Built despite a number of complications and obstacles - The Old Parish Church of Għajnsielem still stands, but as the population of the village grew, a larger church was needed. Thus, in 1924, work began on the Gothic-Lombard style church of today.
Work was intermittent, with construction having to stop during World War I, as well as when the master mason, Toni Vella broke both his legs after falling from the building. More obstacles arose when the first architect resigned, while the second died. The church had four overseeing architects, in total.
The church as we see it today was finally completed with the blessing of the bell tower in June 1979.
The church is dedicated to Our Lady of Loreto, with the titular statue having been moved from the old church to the new one.
