The Dominican Priory and the Church dedicated to Our Lady of the Grotto were established in 1450, by Rev. Pietru Zurchi.

It was built with the help of the Maltese government, the ecclesiastical authority, Maltese benefactors, and King Ferdinand of Spain, who was Catholic.

Built on a cave said to be the site where the Virgin Mary had allegedly appeared to a bird hunter, the Novitiate was founded at the Priory for both the Maltese and Sicilians, in 1609, secular Clerics could obtain a doctorate here
