Built as the conventual church for the Knights of the Order of St John, the construction of this cathedral was commissioned in 1572 by Grand Master Jean de la Cassiere, and designed by the Maltese military architect, Gerolamo Cassar.
Today, it is one of the most popular cultural attractions of the Maltese islands, boasting a number of ornate riches, including Mattia Preti's intricate stone wall designs, as well as a painted vaulted ceiling and side altars.
One of the most famous artworks in all of Europe is also housed here - Caravaggio's 'Beheading of St John the Baptist'. A treasure trove of Baroque art and architecture.
